Apple - Food Reviews

“Shaken, not stirred.” This iconic phrase, spoken by the various manifestations of the charming spy James Bond, refers to how he likes his martinis, a drink which is just as iconic. The martini is a symbol of class, taste, and sophistication, which is why it’s no wonder that the suave espionage artist makes them his drink of choice.

The classic martini recipe calls for a mixture of gin and vermouth, and is served in a special glass, which is essentially a large, wide cone affixed to a very slender stem. The traditional martini is garnished with an olive, as the salt of the brine that the olives are jarred in adds flavor to the martini, and the gin from the martini soaks into the olive, giving it a unique flavor. The olive is usually eaten on completion of the drink, but some martinis feature more than one olive. It is common practice in this case to eat one olive upon the first sip of the martini, and another upon completion of the last sip.

Although many believe that the martini is as perfect a cocktail as one could make, or very close to it, there are a seemingly limitless amounts of variations to the martini, featuring a wide variety of mixers and garnishes. One of my favorites is called an Appletini. This recipe calls vodka to replace the gin, as many martini variations do. This particular style of martini features sour apple flavored vodka and schnapps. I know what you’re thinking, if it doesn’t feature vermouth or gin, how can it rightfully be called a martini? Well, due to the wild concoctions that drink makers have thought up and made a martini is now a looser term to describe any cocktail served in the iconic martini glass. Now even those who do not care for the taste of gin can enjoy the high-society feel of a martini.
